 December 2002 Newsletter

The first carnival for the season was held at Westshore on December 15. A new experience for many kids and from talking with individuals afterwards, they generally performed with distinction. Not much of a surf! Thanks to the juniors and parents who helped out at the carnival. Heres a common theme – if you want to enjoy the day, get involved. Unfortunately the camera man was sick on this day so no photos from this carnival.

Remember the challenges are for yourself – not against other people. Be brave and have a go – it is important that you find out what your limits are. Generally the kids surprise themselves and this is how progression is made. There is also plenty of support for athletes in the water and we wouldn’t put the athletes in conditions that would be beyond them. Have faith in those running the events to manage the situation.

See the results link for your name if you took part.

In the program link, which has been updated for the post Christmas period, is a weekly calendar for those who wish to go to the Ocean Athlete Carnival. Sorry Mal, I know you would be first in the line, but this is only open to athletes 10 –13 (by 31 October). This program applies to every week of the holidays apart from the statutory holidays. Phil will be conducting the training over these weeks. A good opportunity to develop skills, so make the most of it.

Finally, all the best for christmas and new year. Remember to stay safe near water and follow the beach education rules
Have adult supervision
Swim between the flags where possible
Know your limits in surf
If in doubt - stay out
Slip, slop and slap – look after yourself under the sun
