What do we do?

Beach patrols are the primary purpose of surf lifesaving.  No one has drown between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches since Surf Life Saving New Zealand was established in 1932.  This has been achieved by requiring lifeguards to be suitably qualified before they are able to patrol.  The lifeguard award structure provides ongoing training and development of lifeguarding skills.  Annual refreshers ensure standards are maintained.  Life guards keep statistical records of incidents and rescues.  Most rescues are done by inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) or swimmers using swim fins and rescue tube.
